Frida Kahlo & Mexican Easter Egg Decorations

Pastel eggs, little rabbits, baby chicks and fluffy lambs are some of the traditional symbols of Easter. But this year I decided to take a different view and to get inspired by Mexican culture. I have just returned from Milan where I saw the Frida Kahlo exhibition ‘Beyond the Myth’. I discovered more about her life and this has led me to create the following masterpieces inspired by Frida’s Mexican heritage.

In this blog, I want to reveal some of the materials and techniques used to decorate my Frida and Mexican Easter eggs!

You will need:

Decorating time – Approximately 3 hours

How to make it:

Draw your designs using a fine pencil directly on the ceramic eggs

Design on the eggs with pencil first.

Paint your eggs with gouache using a round brush (brush size dependent on your designs).

For the egg of Frida’s face I also used felt fabric as an accessory to make her flower-crown (you can attach the flowers using a glue gun).

You can use felt or other materials to create accessories like Frida's felt flower crown.

Each egg represents a part of Frida’s life and artwork:

  • Egg 1 – A Frida Kahlo face with mono-brow and flower-crown
  • Egg 2 – Inspired by her final artwork ‘Viva la Vida, Watermelons, 1954’
  • Egg 3 – Day of the Dead Skull – the Mexican-inspired holiday commemorating past ancestors
  • Egg 4 – The Sacred Heart  – a long established motif in religious Mexican folk art

Now they are ready to decorate your house and to celebrate Easter!

Absolutely fabulous! A new twist to an edulcorated tradition of quaint eggs. Eggs with a passion.
    Well done.
